6061 vs 6063 Aluminum: Strength, Machinability, Anodizing & How to Choose

When designing parts, you must have been constantly troubled about which material you should choose: 6061 or 6063? Although these two materials seem to have similar properties, in fact, there are fundamental differences in mechanical strength, CNC machining performance, extrusion forming, anodizing effect, and corrosion resistance.

This article will help you find the answer to how to choose between 6061 and 6063 and their differences.

What Are 6061 and 6063 Aluminum Alloys?

Both 6061 and 6063 belong to the 6000 series of aluminum alloys. They enhance the strength and machining properties of the aluminum alloys by adding two elements, silicon and magnesium. The main difference between them lies in the subtle variations in the alloy composition.

6061 Aluminum

6061 belongs to the standard Al-Mg-Si alloy series. Its core feature is the addition of copper and chromium elements. These two elements have significantly enhanced its strength, hardness, and structural stability, making it one of the most commonly used aluminum materials for CNC machining. For you, its greatest advantage lies in its excellent strength, stability, and processing performance.

6063 Aluminum

6063 is also a magnesium-silicon alloy, but it has an extremely low copper content and stricter impurity control. By giving up the high strength brought by copper, it has achieved unparalleled extrusion fluidity, uniform material density, and excellent corrosion resistance and anodizing performance.

The greatest advantage is its stable and excellent surface treatment. If you value the appearance performance of the parts, then 6063 is definitely the best choice.

Aluminum Temper: What Do T5, T6, and O Mean?

When comparing 6061 and 6063 aluminum alloys, you need to pay attention to an easily overlooked factor: the material state (Temper).

6061 and 6063 represent the type and chemical composition of the aluminum alloy, while T5, T6, O, etc. represent the state of the material after heat treatment or processing. Even if using the same aluminum alloy type, different material states can lead to significant differences in mechanical properties such as strength, hardness, and elongation.

For example, 6061-T6 and 6061-O both belong to the 6061 aluminum alloy, but their mechanical properties are different. Similarly, 6063-T5 and 6063-T6 also have different strengths and hardness. Therefore, when comparing the mechanical properties of materials, you should compare them under the same conditions, such as 6061-T6 vs 6063-T6, rather than just comparing “6061 vs 6063”.

If your part needs to withstand mechanical loads, maintain dimensional stability, or undergo frequent threaded connections, it is recommended to clearly specify the aluminum alloy grade and material condition in the drawing, rather than simply marking “6061” or “6063”.

6061 vs 6063 Aluminum: Key Differences and How to Choose

The 6061 and 6063 aluminum alloys exhibit significant differences in various mechanical properties.

Mechanical strength

If you are designing a part that needs to withstand mechanical loads, the difference in strength performance between 6061 and 6063 is something you must take into account.

6061 aluminum alloy has higher mechanical strength and structural rigidity, especially in the T6 state, which provides higher tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. In practical design, this means that your part can maintain better shape stability when subjected to external pressure, equipment vibration, assembly preload, or long-term mechanical loads, and is less likely to undergo permanent deformation.

At the same time, the higher material strength of 6061 can also provide better support for threaded connections, reducing the risk of thread damage and lock-in force reduction during repeated disassembly and assembly.

Therefore, if your part needs to perform structural support, connection fixation, or long-term load-bearing functions, such as tooling fixtures, equipment brackets, and precision structural components, 6061 is usually a more reliable material choice.

When comparing the same temper, 6061 generally provides higher mechanical strength than 6063. This difference is particularly clear in the T6 condition, where 6061-T6 typically has higher tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness than 6063-T6.

Corrosion Resistance

6063 generally offers slightly better corrosion resistance than 6061, particularly for architectural and outdoor applications where surface appearance is important.

If your product needs to withstand dampness, rain, high humidity, or salt spray conditions, such as outdoor equipment enclosures, building aluminum profiles, or non-load-bearing parts in marine environments, 6063 can provide more stable long-term protection, reducing the risks of surface oxidation, pitting, and corrosion.

In contrast, although 6061 also has good corrosion resistance, it contains a certain proportion of copper, and its corrosion resistance in harsh environments is slightly inferior to that of 6063. If your part needs to be used in highly corrosive environments for a long time, it is usually necessary to combine anodizing, powder coating, or other surface protection processes to further extend its service life.

Extrusion Performance

If your product requires the manufacturing of complex aluminum profiles through the extrusion process, 6063 is usually a better choice.

6063 has excellent metal fluidity and extrusion properties, allowing for easy shaping:

  • Thin-walled structures
  • Complex cross-sections
  • Long, continuous profiles
  • High-precision decorative profiles

Moreover, 6063 has lower mold wear during the extrusion process, resulting in higher production efficiency and helping you reduce the manufacturing cost of profiles.

In contrast, 6061 has a higher alloy element content and greater material strength, but it also reduces extrusion fluidity and increases the difficulty of forming. Therefore, 6061 is not suitable for manufacturing complex thin-walled profiles and is more suitable for the production of high-strength structural parts through CNC machining.

If your design goal is to form complex aluminum profiles, 6063 better meets the manufacturing requirements, and if your goal is to process high-precision mechanical parts, 6061 is usually more appropriate.

Thermal Conductivity

In terms of heat dissipation applications, the thermal conductivity difference between 6061 and 6063 is not significant, but 6063 usually has a slightly higher thermal efficiency.

The thermal conductivity coefficient of 6063 aluminum alloy is approximately 200 W/(m·K), and the thermal conductivity of 6061 aluminum alloy is approximately 167 W/(m·K).

Although 6063 has higher thermal conductivity, the difference is not always large enough to determine material selection by itself. For heat sinks and thermal-management components, you should also consider fin geometry, contact area, wall thickness, airflow, and the overall thermal design.

FAQ

Which is more expensive, 6061 or 6063?

Generally, the price of 6061 aluminum alloy is slightly higher than that of 6063 aluminum alloy, but the actual cost difference depends on the material condition (such as T6, T5), material form (sheet, rod, extruded profile), and order quantity.

Of course, your final production also depends on your design and surface treatment requirements.

Is 6061 aluminum better than 6063 for CNC machining?

Both 6061 and 6063 can be CNC machined. However, 6061 is easier to machine, while 6063 is more suitable for being extruded and then processed by CNC.

Which aluminum is better for anodizing?

There is no absolute answer to this question. It depends on your product requirements. For ordinary decorative anodizing (color, matte, glossy), 6063 is recommended as it has better anodizing performance, and for hard and wear-resistant anodizing, 6061 is preferred as it offers better functionality.

Can 6063 aluminum be CNC machined?

Yes, 6063 aluminum can also be CNC machined.

Is 6061 aluminum good for enclosures?

This depends on the applications of your enclosure. If it is focused on structural strength, assembly stability, and the ability to remain unchanged in shape over a long period of use, 6061 is the best choice.

What aluminum alloy is used for keyboard cases?

6063, because the CNC keyboard casing usually has very strict requirements for the anodized finish on the surface, and any flaws are not allowed.

Which aluminum alloy, 6061 or 6063, is better for structural applications?

6061, because 6061 has higher tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. It is suitable for withstanding mechanical loads, vibrations, impacts, and long-term pressure.

Final Thoughts

Both 6061 and 6063 are excellent aluminum alloy materials. However, for engineering projects, choosing the right material is more important than choosing “more expensive materials”.
