What Are Custom Knobs
Customized CNC knobs are specially designed and manufactured control components for rotation or manual operation, based on the axes, panels, PCBs, or mechanical structures of the product.
Appearance is only one aspect of custom knob engineering. The bore, fixing method, knurling, markings, tolerances, and available assembly space can all affect how the knob fits and operates.
Custom Knobs By Materials
The material of the knob will affect its machining performance, surface effect, and final operation feel. Share your design, and we will help select the best knob material for your environment & budget.

Aluminum offers excellent machinability, low weight, and good anodizing performance. We can offer secondary finishing such as sandblasting, polishing, and in-house anodizing to achieve different surface textures and colors.

Common options include 303, 304, and 316/316L stainless steel. With experience in both CNC turning and milling of stainless steel, we can process complex knob structures while maintaining the required dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

We can select different types of steel based on the structure of the parts and combine them with blackening, coating, or other surface treatments.

Copper offers excellent electrical and thermal conductivity together with a distinctive metallic appearance. Because copper is prone to oxidation and fingerprint marks, sandblasting and clear coating can be used to reduce visible handling marks and help protect the surface from oxidation.

Brass has a high density, making it suitable for high-end electronic parts, audio equipment, precision instruments, as well as knobs that require a certain sense of weight.

For applications that require insulation, lightweighting, or superior chemical resistance, you can choose engineering plastics for CNC machining.
Custom Knobs By Functions
Whether you need anti-slip, indication, or quick-adjust features, we’ll turn your operating requirements into a manufacturable design.

Knurling improves grip friction for secure manual operation, and the knob can be customized according to your design requirements.

They are usually designed for applications where the operator needs to read or adjust a specific position, such as control panels, instruments, and audio equipment.

It is commonly used in electronic devices, audio equipment, instruments, and control panels for adjusting volume, frequency, parameters, or other control functions.

When designing, it is necessary to give special attention to the threads, clamping force, operating space, as well as the interference between the knob and other components.
Custom Knobs By Structure
T-handle, ball, star, or wing — describe your operating applications, and we’ll recommend the right structure and verify its tooling feasibility.
T-Handle KnobsThe T-shaped structure provides greater leverage for frequent manual adjustment and clamping.
Ball KnobsThey are suitable for structures that require a more natural hand grip and operation. They can also be customized in different sizes according to the appearance of the device.
Star KnobsThe star-shaped knob provides a larger area for finger contact through multiple gripping regions and is commonly used in manual clamping and adjustment mechanisms.
Wing KnobsThe wing-type structure can provide a large operating space for fingers and is suitable for structures that can be adjusted without the use of tools.
Custom Knobs Surface Finish
The custom knob is usually a component that users directly touch and operate. Therefore, the surface treatment not only affects the appearance but also influences the wear resistance, touch feel, and long-term usage effect.
- Sandblasting + Anodizing – results in a more uniform matte metallic texture and reduces the machining marks.
- Brushing – a uniform surface texture is formed.
- Polishing – achieves a brighter surface effect
- PVD – Provides decorative metallic colors and can improve surface hardness and wear resistance.
Tell us your target finish, and we’ll match it, including Pantone or physical samples.

Quality Control for Your Custom Knobs
A flawless visual appearance does not mean proper assembly fit for CNC knobs. A knob can look perfect but still be too loose on the shaft, difficult to install, or interfere with the PCB or surrounding panel.
- Dimensional Inspection
- Assembly Compatibility
- Surface & Appearance Inspection
We inspect dimensions, assembly fit, and batch color consistency before shipping. Send your 2D drawings with key dimensions for a free DFM and inspection plan.
One Supplier for the Complete Custom Knob Project

If your knobs require multiple processes such as CNC machining, surface treatment, and laser marking, the coordination among suppliers often increases the complexity of communication and schedule management. By integrating CNC machining with our in-house surface treatment capabilities within the same production system, we can more conveniently coordinate processing, color, surface effect, and delivery requirements.
For new products, we can start from a prototype, and for products that are already in mass production, we can continue to produce based on existing samples and support subsequent orders for projects of different models and colors.
You don’t need to manage multiple suppliers simultaneously for a single knob. Contact us at Shanghai Yecheng for your next custom knobs project!
Custom CNC Knob Applications
Audio, test equipment, industrial, electronic, or musical gear — we’ve made knobs for all of them. Share your project specs to get started.

We can customize round holes, D-shaped holes, knurled grooves, set screw holes, and position indication lines according to the shaft diameter and installation method. It can be used for power amplifiers, mixers, effectors, synthesizers, and other electronic devices for musical instruments, such as custom guitar knobs.

For this type of application, we pay particular attention to the alignment accuracy of the custom knobs and shafts, the position of the scales, and the wear resistance after long-term and frequent operation.

The size, installation method, and fixation structure of the knob can be customized according to the internal space of the equipment, and mechanical features such as threads, locking screw holes, and anti-rotation structures can also be processed.

We should pay more attention to the size, color, and surface finish consistency in mass production. Anodizing is commonly selected for its color consistency, surface appearance, and wear resistance.
Yes. We can conduct size inspections based on your 2D drawings and key dimension requirements and provide corresponding inspection data according to the project specifications. For key dimensions, inspections can be carried out using devices such as a CMM, optical measuring equipment, and profile measurement.
The CNC-machined aluminum alloy knobs inherently possess excellent strength and durability. If the knobs are to be operated frequently, anodizing can further enhance the surface wear resistance while also providing a stable color and surface effect. The actual durability also depends on the material, structural design, surface treatment, usage frequency, and usage environment.
If your knob needs to be installed onto an existing shaft or PCB/panel component, it is recommended to provide the corresponding mating dimensions or 2D drawings. This way, problems such as the knob being too loose, too tight, or interfering with adjacent components can be identified before processing.
Sure, you can provide us with the 2D CAD drawings in formats such as DXF and DWG.
Sure, we have our in-house anodizing production line, which can enable you to customize based on Pantone colors. And of course, we can do a match it based on the physical sample.
There is no single best material for every shift knob. The right choice depends on weight, temperature, durability, appearance, and machining requirements.
- Aluminum is a good choice when you want a lightweight knob with extensive color and surface-finish options.
- Brass is suitable when you prefer a heavier and more substantial feel.
- Stainless steel can be considered when durability, corrosion resistance, and a solid metallic feel are the main priorities.
CNC Knobs Built Around Your Design
A custom CNC knob needs more than the correct outer diameter and height. The shaft interface, bore tolerance, fixing method, knurling geometry, marking position, and available assembly space can all affect the final fit and user experience.
Shaft & Bore Fit
We can machine round, D-shaped, splined, and other custom bores according to your shaft dimensions and required fit. Bore tolerances can be controlled based on the actual assembly requirements rather than using a one-size-fits-all tolerance.
Set Screws & Threads
Set-screw holes, threaded holes, and internal threads can be customized according to the shaft structure and fixing method. We also check screw access and surrounding wall thickness to reduce the risk of interference during assembly.
Knurling Design
Straight and diamond knurling can be customized by knurl pitch, depth, pattern, knurled area, and length. The design can be adjusted according to the required grip and operating frequency.
Marking & Indicators
Logos, numbers, scales, arrows, and position indicators can be added by CNC machining or laser engraving. Their position and orientation can be reviewed together with the shaft and panel assembly.
After reviewing your design, we provide DFM feedback and a quotation before machining. For suitable projects, prototypes can be completed in as fast as 7 days. Send us your drawings to start your custom knob project.
